🌱 How can you tell the sex of your plants?
Cannabis is dioecious – that means there are male and female plants. Sounds banal at first, but it’s crucial in growing: only the female plants produce the coveted flowers. The males, on the other hand, produce pollen and cause unwanted seed formation in your buds.
👉 Means for you: Get the males out before the party starts!
👨♂️ The male plants
You can recognize males by the nodes – where the leaf and stem meet.
- Small round balls form that look like tiny buds.
- These develop into pollen sacs.
- When they burst open, they release pollen, which pollinates your females.
Result: lots of seeds, but hardly any potent flowers. That’s exactly what you want to avoid.
👩♀️ The female plants
Females show a different sign in the same places:
- Small, hair-like pistils (styles) that sprout from the nodes as fine white hairs.
- They serve to capture pollen – but without males they remain virgin and concentrate their energy on flower production.
👉 As soon as you see the first hairs, you can rejoice: this is the starting signal for your future buds.

🥀 Sort out weak plants
In addition to the males, you should also get rid of weak plants. Why?
- They show yellowing, pale leaves or deformed growth forms.
- Their stems are thin and growth is puny.
- They consume water, light and nutrients but do not provide a satisfactory end product
- Worse still, they are often more susceptible to pests and diseases, putting your entire grow box at risk.
👉 In short: it’s better to have fewer plants, but strong and healthy ones.
🧾 Brief summary
You can recognize males by their round pollen sacs and females by their fine white hairs. Weak plants only cost energy and increase the risk of pests – it’s better to rely on a few strong ladies for maximum harvest quality.
